Luxury Holiday Cottages in Porthtowan

A quaint coastal village perched on Cornwall’s north coast, Porthtowan enjoys beautiful views over the Atlantic, sheltered surfing conditions and a handful of beachside eateries.

Nestled between St Agnes and Portreath, Porthtowan is a picturesque coastal village home to soft sands, endless coastal walks and relaxed dining spots. Taking its name from the ‘cove of sand dunes’ in Cornish, Porthtowan falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has retained much of its original charm. The coast path winds over to Chapel Porth Beach and Wheal Coates in one direction, while the other leads over the clifftops and into Portreath. The shores of Porthtowan itself are home to Tris and Eskinzo Surf Schools, while The Blue Bar and Unicorn Inn await for sunset drinks and seafood suppers. For those who love a more peaceful dip, there’s a hidden sea pool too, which can only be accessed at low tide.

Also surrounded by mining heritage, this corner of Cornwall is renowned for its ancient tin mines and National Trust sites. Spend days exploring Poldark’s land, sample locally pressed cider from ancient orchards and beach hop over the sandy coves dotted amongst the rugged coastline - all before returning to one of our luxury holiday homes to enjoy endless seascapes and hot tub soaks.

Recommendations for Porthtowan

Between 1st October to 14th May dogs are permitted on Porthtowan Beach. Lying within a World Heritage mining area, take to the South West Coast Path with your four-legged friends to explore 18th century engine houses and disused tram lines that were once used to carry copper to neighbouring towns.

Alternatively, 10 minutes up the coast, St Agnes Beach welcomes canine companions throughout the year.

Home to a variety of Cornish heritage landmarks, hire bikes and explore some of the mining relics located along bike trails in the area or pull on your wellies and venture along the South West Coast Path by foot.

Located a 30 minute drive away, Flambards Theme Park is a great all-weather attraction. Wander through a life-sized recreation of a Victorian street before heading outside to ride rollercoasters and other fairground-themed attractions.

Many of Porthtowan’s cafés and restaurants are conveniently located near the beach, perfect for when you need something quick and easy after days spent relaxing on the sand. The Unicorn on The Beach is a popular coastal pub and restaurant promoting local fisherman and small producers and is perfectly positioned for sunset-watching. Offering a selection of pub classics served alongside artisan wines and curated cocktails, head to The Blue Bar and Brasserie for relaxing beachside moments.

As one of the more exposed beaches on this particular stretch of Atlantic coast, Porthtowan is a surfer’s paradise, producing some of the best surfing conditions for wave-riders of all abilities. For those looking to develop their skills and knowledge, Eskinzo Surf  School offers a range of lessons for beginners to the more advanced. Flanked by hidden caves and rock pools, Porthtowan is well regarded as one of the north coast’s best family-friendly beaches, with seasonal lifeguard service and Blue Flag status for exceptional quality and cleanliness since 2004.
