Whitehay Charity Duck Race Goes Down A Storm – Quite Literally
Earlier on this summer, the Perfect Stays team had the pleasure of attending a charity duck race, held on the immense Whitehay Estate in Withiel – home to The Watermill, our exclusive holiday property.
For those looking to really immerse themselves into Cornish life, we would highly recommend attending this annual event. Watching 600 yellow ducks race down the River Ruthern on a Friday night is an increasingly popular family orientated event, which takes place every year on the first Friday in August (bar next year when it will be held on the second Friday!). Organised each year by Judy Douglas-Boyd and Simon Skelding, all proceeds go to St Clements Church in Withiel – with this year raising an impressive £1700.
Judy and Simon’s duck race attracts visitors from all around, and this year was no different. After a gloriously sunny day, around 6:00 pm, the heavens decided to open and treat us to a spectacular thunder storm. This did not deter the crowds, however, as an impressive gathering of families, resplendent in wellies and waterproofs, came together in the picturesque woodlands of the Whitehay Estate to enjoy the celebrations – local ale in one hand and a home made burger from the local butchers – T H Lobb, in the other. Glasses were never empty for long, stomachs were soon full and the sun soon parted through the clouds.
As well as the main event, guests could purchase raffle tickets and children were awarded prizes for the best duck race hat. After selling an impressive 600 yellow ducks, these were then launched from the small bridge and proceeded to charge down river, much to the delight of all the children. Donning wetsuits, children and adults alike joined in the race, chasing ducks and rescuing the odd one that managed to wander off and get lost amongst the reeds. The wiling volunteers then had the great task of fishing all ducks out of the river, which seemed to delight the children just as much as the actual race, armed with fishing nets at the ready in a bid to rescue the most ducks.
When all ducks were safely rescued from the river, the eagerly anticipating winners were announced, with a generous cash prize of £100 awarded for first place. The evening continued to buzz on merrily until people slowly made their way back home – although guests staying at The Watermill wouldn’t have far to go.
