Recommendations for Crantock
Crantock is a fantastic base camp for many of Cornwall’s most popular festivals and events. The world-renowned Boardmasters festival takes place over four days in August. Surf and sounds take over Fistral Beach, with the event hosting a prestigious surfing competition and live music courtesy of acclaimed artists from across the world. The Watering Hole similarly welcomes Bands in the Sands to Perranporth Beach in early summer, where a lineup of international artists takes to the stage.
Rock Oyster Festival is one of north Cornwall’s most popular annual staples. Usually held in July, the event is held at Roskear Farm, near Wadebridge, and attracts visitors from far and wide to its celebration of artisan food, music and art. For more live music, keep an eye on the Eden Sessions lineup, where global stars perform to the backdrop of the iconic Eden Project biomes, near St Austell, throughout the summer.
The largest event in the area is the three-day Royal Cornwall Show. Taking place just outside Wadebridge every June, the county’s largest event offers a taste of Cornish life and attracts thousands to its roster of exhibits, stalls and activities.
You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to walking routes in and near Crantock. One of the most scenic stretches is a circular route that begins at Crantock Beach and winds along the Gannel Estuary to Penpol Creek, before looping back through the village of Crantock itself. The coastal path charts west and leads to Holywell Bay, passing Pentire Point West and the hidden gem of Polly Joke along the way. In the summer, a seasonal foot ferry runs across the River Gannel from Crantock Beach, unlocking the coastal path to Pentire Headland and Fistral Beach.
Crantock is a 10 minute drive from Newquay, a vibrant seaside town with ample attractions, beaches, bars and eateries. You can easily spend a day soaking up the sun on one of Newquay’s sweeping crescents of golden sand before admiring the far-reaching ocean vistas along the South West Coastal Path.
Some of Cornwall’s most popular destinations are a short drive away. Highlights include Camel Creek Family Theme Park in Wadebridge (6 miles), the Eden Project in St Austell (16 miles), Trerice House and Garden near Newquay (17 miles) and Tintagel Castle (23 miles).
Low tide reveals a mystery that has captivated locals and visitors alike for generations. The cliffs of Crantock Beach are peppered with caves. One of the caves, known as Pipers Hole, is where you’ll find the beautiful carving of a woman and her horse. Be sure to check the tide times before you set off and keep an eye on the waters, as the cave does get completely cut off from the rest of the beach.
