Recommendations for Salcombe

While there isn’t a beach within Salcombe itself, there are several within walking distance. Soar Mill Cove is among the highlights and benefits from being dog-friendly all year round. The secluded, sandy inlet lies along the coastal path around from Bolt Head. Salcombe’s neighbouring village of Hope Cove is home to two sandy beaches: Mouthwell Sands operates a seasonal dog ban, while Harbour Beach welcomes canine companions throughout the year. There are golden sands on the other side of the river, too. Hop aboard the ferry and enjoy a short walk to Mill Bay and Sunny Cove.

For sophisticated dining with outstanding estuary views, head to Dick and Wills on Fore Street. This waterside brasserie serves fresh local seafood and steaks, with its ‘famous fish and chips’ being a popular menu staple. Al fresco dining with a more casual atmosphere can be enjoyed along the waterfront by Fish Quay at The Crab Shed. The centrepiece of the menu is the restaurant’s hand-picked local crab meat, picked and cooked by them on the quay.

Fore Street’s Sailor V is a popular café among locals and visitors for its tasty selection of milkshakes, juice blends and cocktails. A traditional, historic pub is found along Union Street with The Fortescue Inn. This 19th century pub is Grade II listed and serves a varied menu featuring sandwiches, pies and stone-baked pizza.

Make the most of Salcombe’s enviable coastal location with a scenic coastal walk towards Hope Cove or navigate a riverside trail along the banks of the estuary. There’s plenty of opportunity to get on and in the water too. You can hire kayaks and paddle boards from Salcombe Sea Kayak, and book on a tour of the river too. Adventure South also offers these services, with the addition of coasteering and climbing experiences, and more.

If sailing is your preferred method of water transport, you can learn how to do just that with Salcombe Dinghy Sailing. For an activity that doesn’t require sea legs, try your hand at distilling your own gin with Salcombe Gin.
