Newlyn
Beaches and watersports
West Cornwall is home to some breathtaking beaches, with the turquoise waters of Porthcurno, Pednvounder and Porthchapel just a short drive from Newlyn. The nearby Marazion Beach is great for families and has the spectacle of St Michael’s Mount in the background. Across the Lizard Peninsula is Sennen Cove – a surfing paradise with high quality surf schools offering lessons and equipment hire. We’d also recommend exploring the magical coastline by kayak, boat, jet ski or paddle board. If you love sea fishing, there are various day trips available from Penzance.
Outdoor pursuits
Rugged clifftop walks and jaw-dropping sea views are abundant around this stretch of coast. Amble towards St Michael’s Mount or pick up the South West Coast Path in Mousehole and follow it round to Lamorna Cove where you’ll be regaled by staggering rock formations. Keen cyclists will love the First and Last trail from Hayle to Land’s End and golfers can choose between Praa Sands, Cape Cornwall, West Cornwall and Tregenna Golf Clubs. No holiday is complete without a walk around Land’s End – the most south westerly tip of the UK.
Festivals and events
Newlyn Fish Festival is an annual event which raises an extraordinary amount of money for local causes. The day is filled with fish displays, cooking demonstrations, harbour events and music. The Mousehole Christmas Lights is another legendary spectacle near Newlyn. Switched on every year in the week before Christmas, dazzling illuminations light up the harbour and boats, and a range of local events helps everyone to get that festive feeling.
Food and drink
One of the largest fishing harbours in the UK, expect exemplary seafood at the many restaurants in Newlyn and Penzance, not to mention Sennen Cove, Porthleven and St Ives. Drop into Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar for a quick bite, whet your appetite at the Tolcarne Inn or dine with a view of St Michael’s Mount at The Godolphin Arms in Marazion. We also recommend Jelberts in Newlyn for some of the best ice cream in Cornwall. For the wine-lovers, Polgoon Vineyard in Penzance makes a brilliant day out.
Activities for children
If the weather takes a turn, Paradise Park in nearby Hayle is every child’s dream day out with over 650 birds and animals to see, meet and learn about. Geevor Tin Mine is also great for a rainy day, with guided tours offering an educational insight into what daily life was like for Cornish tin miners. Another memorable activity for the children is a trip out to sea with Marine Discovery in Penzance. Climb aboard one of their boats and go in search of dolphins, basking sharks, sunfish, porpoises and seals.
Time for pampering
Relax and unwind at the beautiful St Ives Harbour Hotel Spa, which is under 40 minutes away by car. Alternatively, the C Bay Spa at The Carbis Bay Hotel offers a wonderful setting for indulgence. Enjoy a glass of Cornish fizz and soak up the sea views in between treatments for complete relaxation. Both C Bay Spa and St Ives Harbour have amazing views over the bay and offer high quality treatments and use of their leisure facilities.
Heritage and culture
Due to its clear light and spectacular surroundings, Newlyn has always been a popular destination for artists. The Newlyn School of Art offers a range of short courses and evening sessions, which are fantastic options for creative holidays. Cornwall’s world famous open-air Minack Theatre is also just a 25 minute drive away. Open to day visitors as well as theatre goers, it has breathtaking views over the ocean. A visit to Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without exploring the beautiful St Michael’s Mount, too.
