A period home with a rich artistic history

With a shimmering harbour backdrop and far reaching sea views, Salubrious House is set in an unbeatable location in the heart of St Ives. Originally built in 1812, its alluring history is integral to its charm. Home to a number of eminent artists throughout the years, including Douglas Portway, it was famously one of the best party houses in St Ives, with guests of honour including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

Today, the interiors exude a laid back coastal style mixed with touches of regency glamour. The upstairs open plan kitchen, dining and living area is edged by bay windows framing the harbour and sea beyond. Textured wallpapers combine with on-trend brass accents to create an atmospheric space for socialising. Gather around the bespoke solid wood dining table for decadent feasts or take to the first floor terrace for martinis with a view that spans from Porthminster to Porthmeor Beach.

An upside-down design places the first three bedrooms on the ground floor. Both with king beds, the en-suite master and second bedroom enjoy sparkling views, while bedroom three offers zip and link beds that can be set as twins or a super king. With an emerald floor, edgy black tiles and an abundance of tropical plants, the family bathroom is completely captivating. A vivid green clawfoot bath takes centre stage, offering the perfect excuse for lingering soaks in invigorating surroundings. Nestled under sloping eaves on the second floor, the final bedroom comes with a king size and single bed, while the crow’s nest window seat is a tranquil spot to watch the sunrise. With salubrious meaning ‘health and wellbeing’, every room promotes a feeling of contentment and calm.

Tucked away at the end of the garden, the studio is steeped in artistic history. A photograph of Douglas Portway taken in this space now appears in the National Portrait Gallery, making it a nostalgic haven for curling up with a book. Almost unheard of in the centre of St Ives, the spacious garden provides a peaceful oasis just moments from the buzz of the town. With a gate leading onto Fore Street, you couldn’t get much closer to St Ives’ cobbled streets, artisan shops, galleries, cafes and beaches.

A tranquil place to sit and watch the town come alive, curl up in the window seat as boats bob in the water and dogs hare along the beach below. At dinner time, pull back a rattan chair and come together at the bespoke oak dining table, lit by a cluster of pendent lights overhead. Artwork by the renowned Wilhelmina Barns-Graham titled ‘St Ives from Salubrious House’ provides a fitting reminder of the home’s artistic history, prolific visitors and glittering party past.
