Recommendations for Mousehole

Described by poet Dylan Thomas as “the loveliest village in England”, Mousehole is well known for its quaint streets, picture-perfect harbour and far-reaching sea views. It is also the setting for the popular children’s tale, The Mousehole Cat. Visitors particularly flock to the village during the festive season to enjoy Mousehole’s much-loved Christmas lights and taste stargazy pie, a local delicacy.

You’ll find traditional Cornish pubs, cosy cafés and restaurants on your doorstep in Mousehole. Nestled on the harbourfront, the Ship Inn is enviably placed to enjoy sea views from within its characterful interior. Sink into a window seat and tuck into a menu that showcases reimagined pub classics and seasonal specials.

On the other side of the village, you’ll find the Old Coastguard. Boasting an upper deck and sun deck, this stylish restaurant serves a traditional brasserie menu inspired by the coast, with dishes changing with the seasons. Also along the harbour is 2 Fore Street. This relaxed, bistro-style restaurant enjoys views across Mount’s Bay and has a secluded garden for dining al fresco.

Among the café highlights is Four Teas Café, a 1940s-inspired eatery that offers tasty treats throughout the day, including takeaway Sunday lunches. Mousehole Deli & Kitchen can also be found in the heart of the village, serving a variety of dishes and takeaway options that cater to all tastes.

Mousehole doesn’t have a train station, but the mainline is close by at Penzance. There are regular buses from Mousehole to Penzance train station.

Walking the narrow, cobbled streets of Mousehole uncovers a patchwork of art galleries and independent shops. You’ll pass tempting cafés along the way, not to mention captivating sea views. Be sure to find a scenic seat along the harbour and tuck into fish and chips from one of the local takeaways – just keep your eyes peeled for seagulls!

Mousehole’s Christmas lights are a treat for all who visit during the festive season. Attracting visitors from far and wide, the vibrant display of colour cascading off the harbour’s boats is truly beautiful. Tom Bawcock’s Eve, taking place on 23rd December each year, is a traditional feast day where Mousehole’s stargazy pie is eaten.
