Nightjar

Dulverton, SomersetSleeps: 8Bedrooms: 4Bathrooms: 4

Home > Our Properties > Nightjar
Far from the madding crowds, Nightjar is a country retreat promising ambrosial luxury and rustic charm on the edge of Exmoor.

From its humble beginnings as a hayloft, this heavenly Somerset hideaway has been sympathetically transformed. Spread across one floor, the kitchen, dining area and lounge form the beating heart of Nightjar, with four bedrooms nestled in separate wings.

The magnificent freestanding log burner takes centre stage and casts flickering warmth across plush cushions and furs. Stargazing is obligatory, so warm your toes in front of glowing embers before retiring to the balcony for a nightcap under celestial skies.

Two cosy bedrooms sit at each end of the horseshoe shaped hayloft, all with en-suites. Flooded with gentle light, the spacious king sized master bedroom looks out across rolling fields. Wake up late and tuck into hot buttered toast and steaming coffee before plunging into the freestanding bath for a morning soak. Finished in a flourish of soft pink and fawn, a versatile zip and link bed is nestled under sloping eaves next door. In the opposite wing, an alluring king sized room and delightful twin complete the bedroom set.

Available to book alongside the neighbouring Willow’s Rest and with acres of private countryside surrounding both properties, fall in love with the simple pleasures of the great outdoors. Build woodland dens, stomp through deserted fields and recline in the long grass for a ploughman’s picnic under the hazy sun. When the children are in bed, sink into the indulgent hot tub for moments of complete tranquility.

Set on the edge of Exmoor with stables on site and horse-riding centres nearby, there’s no better way to explore the wilds of Somerset and Devon. Once you’ve had your rural fill, meander in and out of Dulverton’s independent cafés and shops before tucking into an exquisite meal at one of the local award-winning restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Masons Arms just a short drive away.

  • Indulgent hot tub

More about theGround Floor

Kitchen and Dining Room

Charming farmhouse style meets sleek open plan design in Nightjar’s magnificent kitchen and dining room. The modern central island is finished in black polished stone and features a built-in Zanussi microwave and cleverly concealed storage. A Falcon oven and five ring induction hob make cooking up a country banquet a breeze, ready to be enjoyed at the oak dining table seating ten. The Kenwood dishwasher handles the cleaning up while a Dolce Gusto coffee machine and Haier wine cooler take care of after dinner drinks.

Please note: guests with pacemakers should avoid using the induction hob as this can interfere with the device.

Lounge

Adorned with velvet cushions and sheepskin throws, the lounge is a haven of colours and textures. Start the night with board games before cosying up on one of the vintage leather sofas to the crackle of the grand freestanding wood burner. Complete with a Bose soundbar speaker, fill the evening with music as you catch up with family and friends. A 65” LG Smart TV complete with Netflix and DVD player provides a variety of fabulous entertainment options, while balmy summer evenings are best enjoyed from the sun-drenched decking.

Master Bedroom

Bright, spacious and blissfully private, the master bedroom looks out across the surrounding countryside. With a king size bed for sleepy mornings, this bedroom features beautiful soft grey interiors. An idyllic spot for relaxation, take advantage of the expansive double height windows by raising the blinds and looking out across the moors from the comfort of a vibrant velvet armchair.

Framed by wooden beams, the en-suite bathroom is finished in traditional exposed stone. The luxurious bath enjoys a sky view from the Velux window, creating a perfect evening escape to sink into a cloud of bubbles. A walk-in Nikles shower with waterfall head promises an invigorating start to the day, while a Hatria farmhouse style sink continues the country feel.

Bedroom Two

A real interior haven, bedroom two is an elegant space with a creative and homely design. The versatile zip and link bed provides the option for a king or twins, tailoring the room for all group possibilities. The unique wood effect wall and brushed cotton bedding continue the pastoral theme, while side tables and a rustic chest of drawers provide ample storage space. A large walk-in shower in the en-suite bathroom makes for an exhilarating wake-up call before heading out for long country rambles across Exmoor.

Just outside bedroom two, a separate TV area complete with bean bags and a selection of games provides the perfect opportunity to break away from the group.

Bedroom Three

Located at the opposite end of the house to the master bedroom, this cosy king size room is flooded with natural light, while an expansive mirrored wardrobe provides plenty of hanging space. High vaulted ceilings and original beams add to the cosy cottage feel, while vibrant soft furnishings create an inviting setting to lose yourself in a book before breakfast.

The sleek en-suite bathroom has everything you need to prepare for the day, with a huge walk-in shower, stunning wraparound feature wall and tree-top views.

Bedroom Four

Inspired by coast and country, this spacious twin bedroom occupies the farthest corner of the property and is awash with colour. From the striking deep blue interiors and industrial style beds to the arresting wooden beams and furniture, the space is a welcoming bolthole for guests of all ages.

Beautifully finished from floor to ceiling in textured blue and grey tiles, the adjoining en-suite has a luxurious roll-top bath.

Utility Room

Complete with a Miele washing machine and tumble dryer along with a large Villeroy and Bosch sink, the utility room is well equipped to ensure everything is in order during your stay. There is also a handy W/C at the end of the utility.

Dulverton

Heritage and culture

Less than half an hour’s drive from Dulverton, Dunster Castle is a National Trust treasure with pretty subtropical gardens, a working watermill and dramatic views over the Quantock Hills. Knightshayes is another National Trust estate with acres of gardens, parklands, woodland walks and wild play areas. Literary buffs will relish the chance to follow in the footsteps of one of England’s most prestigious romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Explore 51 miles of the Quantock Hills, the Brendon Hills and surrounding Exmoor landscape through winding waymarked paths, beautiful valleys, charming chapels and rich countryside.

Food and drink

After a brisk country walk, The Bridge Inn is a great place to stop and refuel, with a friendly atmosphere and varied menu. One of Dulverton’s hidden gems, Woods Bar and Restaurant is a charming country pub, set on the edge of Exmoor. Its classic British cooking and extensive wine list make it a firm favourite amongst locals. Stop by The Swan for dinner and drinks at the oldest pub in Bampton, or visit The Masons Arms, a Michelin star restaurant. The Tarr Inn also comes highly recommended.

Activities for children

Animal lovers and bird watchers will love nothing more than a visit to Exmoor’s Owl and Hawk Centre, situated just 12 miles from Dulverton. A 15th century farmstead with a large collection of owls, birds of prey and friendly animals, enjoy a walk with a herd of alpaca or marvel at the outdoor flying display. Alternatively, a day out with Exmoor Wildlife Safaris will add an extra splash of fun to any holiday. Explore the dramatic windswept moors, rushing rivers and wooded valleys as your knowledgeable guide tells you all about the local legends of the area.

Outdoor pursuits

Part of the Exmoor National Park, the ancient Tarr Steps walking route passes through a beautiful wooded valley of the River Barle and the heathland of Winsford Hill. If you'd prefer, cycle over the River Barle and follow the gentle track towards Knightshayes Court or discover Tiverton Castle by bike for a tougher climb. Exmoor provides fantastic cycling trails for all abilities, as well as horse riding treks. Keen golfers will love Somerset’s oldest club, Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club. There are also plenty of opportunities for fishing in Exe Valley as well as clay pigeon and game shoots with Shalden Shooting School.

Beaches and watersports

The North Devon coastline is home to some great beaches for sunbathing, surfing and walking. Saunton Sands can be reached within an hour’s drive and makes an idyllic day trip location with its expanse of sand, food outlets and beach shops. Nearby Lynmouth Beach is backed by wooded hills and served by a unique cliff railway from Lynton. Other recommended beaches are Putsborough Sands and Woolacombe. Less than a 20 minute drive from Dulverton, Wimbleball Lake Country Park offers a range of watersports.

Time for pampering

For a spot of pampering during your stay, Heyford House Day Spa in nearby Willand promises serene relaxation for both body and mind. With a range of treatments and therapies available, from deep tissue massage to radiant skin facials, there’s plenty to make you feel recharged and refreshed. We also recommend The Cleve for a fantastic spa day, a Victorian country house with a twist, or The Mount near Taunton, another luxuriously traditional house. With vast countryside views, these spas offer complete tranquility.
