From its humble beginnings as a hayloft, this heavenly Somerset hideaway has been sympathetically transformed. Spread across one floor, the kitchen, dining area and lounge form the beating heart of Nightjar, with four bedrooms nestled in separate wings.
The magnificent freestanding log burner takes centre stage and casts flickering warmth across plush cushions and furs. Stargazing is obligatory, so warm your toes in front of glowing embers before retiring to the balcony for a nightcap under celestial skies.
Two cosy bedrooms sit at each end of the horseshoe shaped hayloft, all with en-suites. Flooded with gentle light, the spacious king sized master bedroom looks out across rolling fields. Wake up late and tuck into hot buttered toast and steaming coffee before plunging into the freestanding bath for a morning soak. Finished in a flourish of soft pink and fawn, a versatile zip and link bed is nestled under sloping eaves next door. In the opposite wing, an alluring king sized room and delightful twin complete the bedroom set.
With acres of private countryside surrounding the property, fall in love with the simple pleasures of the great outdoors. Build woodland dens, stomp through deserted fields and recline in the long grass for a ploughman’s picnic under the hazy sun. When the children are in bed, sink into the indulgent hot tub for moments of complete tranquility.
Set on the edge of Exmoor and horse-riding centres nearby, there’s no better way to explore the wilds of Somerset and Devon. Once you’ve had your rural fill, meander in and out of Dulverton’s independent cafés and shops before tucking into an exquisite meal at one of the local award-winning restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Masons Arms just a short drive away.

Knightshayes is another National Trust estate with acres of gardens, parklands, woodland walks and wild play areas. Literary buffs will relish the chance to follow in the footsteps of one of England’s most prestigious romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Explore 51 miles of the Quantock Hills, the Brendon Hills and surrounding Exmoor landscape through winding waymarked paths, beautiful valleys, charming chapels and rich countryside.
Food and drink
After a brisk country walk, The Bridge Inn is a great place to stop and refuel, with a friendly atmosphere and varied menu. One of Dulverton’s hidden gems, Woods Bar and Restaurant is a charming country pub, set on the edge of Exmoor. Its classic British cooking and extensive wine list make it a firm favourite amongst locals. Stop by The Swan for dinner and drinks at the oldest pub in Bampton, or visit The Masons Arms, a Michelin star restaurant. The Tarr Farm Inn also comes highly recommended.
Activities for children
Animal lovers and bird watchers will love nothing more than a visit to Exmoor’s Owl and Hawk Centre, situated just 12 miles from Dulverton. A 15th century farmstead with a large collection of owls, birds of prey and friendly animals, enjoy a walk with a herd of alpaca or marvel at the outdoor flying display. Alternatively, a day out with Exmoor Wildlife Safaris will add an extra splash of fun to any holiday. Outdoor pursuits
Part of the Exmoor National Park, the ancient Tarr Steps walking route passes through a beautiful wooded valley of the River Barle and the heathland of Winsford Hill. If you'd prefer, cycle over the River Barle and follow the gentle track towards Knightshayes Court or discover Tiverton Castle by bike for a tougher climb. Exmoor provides fantastic cycling trails for all abilities, as well as horse riding treks. Keen golfers will love Somerset’s oldest club, Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club. There are also plenty of opportunities for fishing in Exe Valley as well as clay pigeon and game shoots with Shalden Shooting School.

The North Devon coastline is home to some great beaches for sunbathing, surfing and walking. Saunton Sands can be reached within an hour’s drive and makes an idyllic day trip location with its expanse of sand, food outlets and beach shops. This was our second visit to Nightjar - it's such a lovely property with wonderful views across the countryside. The barn itself has been restored to a very high standard and is very comfortable and well equipped and the location is great too. Perfect Stays are always very efficient, helpful and friendly.
”Just returned from Nightjar in Somerset after a lovely week in luxurious accommodation. The converted barn is stunning, extremely spacious and beautifully appointed with wonderful views directly over the Somerset countryside. This is our second holiday with Perfect Stays, and we have found them to be extremely efficient, knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. We will certainly use them again!
”We recently had the pleasure of staying at Nightjar and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience. From the moment we made our reservation, the Perfect Stays team provided exceptional customer service. Every interaction, whether it was over the phone or via email, was friendly and professional, made us feel valued and well taken care of. As for the property itself, it exceeded our expectations in every way. We wholeheartedly recommend a stay at Nightjar and booking through Perfect Stays.
”We recently had the pleasure of staying at Nightjar and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience. Nestled amongst the picturesque Somerset countryside near Dulverton, it's a truly peaceful retreat. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a lovely hamper filled with some tasty treats! The house itself was even more stunning than the photos portrayed, and it was evident that great care had been taken in its presentation. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we could possibly need, and the overall finish of the property was of the highest standard. Even with its luxurious feel, Nightjar still manages to maintain a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it feel like a true home away from home with a lovely, relaxed vibe.
”The customer service before our stay was excellent, and they were really helpful whenever I had a query. The house was fantastic! The hosts were very friendly and helpful, and we arrived to a lovely hamper. The standard of décor and furnishings was really high, and the location was wonderful too. We will definitely book with Perfect Stays again in the future.
”Nightjar is one of the most breath-taking properties I have ever stayed at. We can tell the owners have put the utmost pride in this quaint farmhouse. The views from the stunning garden are absolutely beautiful. Everyone I liaised with at Perfect Stays was incredibly helpful, they helped to put together a list of excursions and thanks to them I managed to find a local baker who delivered a delicious birthday cake for my mother. Honestly, do not pass up the opportunity to stay here and make beautiful memories just like we have done. We will certainly be returning. Thank you very much.
”This is a great property in quiet beautiful countryside. The main living area is wider than the photos may suggest, and property has everything you need. High standard bedrooms & bathrooms, lovely wood burner. Nearby small town has all shops you will need, very helpful and good butcher.
”We stayed at Nightjar in Dulverton - stunning property with everything you could wish for. The area was lovely with lots of great places to eat and things to do. Would highly recommend Nightjar and Perfect Stays.
”Wonderful house, beautifully furnished and very well equipped. Loved the area, which was new to us, and it was a fantastic long weekend break with friends. All the bedrooms, beds and showers were comfortable and the layout was good for socialising. Awesome woodburner too - good thing there were lots of fallen trees. We'll be back with our 'weekends away' gang.
”Superb properties / celebrated two birthdays & New Year. Tom and Lucy very friendly & helpful - we had a wonderful week.
”Loved this barn. Lucy and family were lovely. Would have booked again for Christmas 2022 but someone beat us to it. Fab property - would recommend to all.
”We stayed at Nightjar with friends and family to celebrate our anniversary. The accommodation was fantastic, with very high quality furniture and furnishing and extremely well equipped, yet still felt very comfortable and welcoming. We arranged a chef, Joe Draper, through the concierge service, for a special dinner while we were there. I cannot praise him highly enough, the whole meal was incredible and I would highly recommend him. The attention to detail at Nightjar was exceptional and the welcome hamper provided was very high quality, with lovely local produce and was far more extensive than expected. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, providing us with some useful local information. We had a fantastic stay and will definitely return.
”An amazing weekend. I didn't think that the barn could be any better than it looked on the website but it was everything and more. The barn is perfectly laid out and for entertaining and it felt like home from the moment we arrived. We can't wait to come back. The attention to quality and detail far exceeds any property we have been to before. Thank you and happy holidays to all future visitors.
