Recommendations for Hope Cove

Hope Cove is a great spot for sea swimming. In fact, it has been hailed by Outdoor Swimming Magazine as one of the 10 best beaches for swimming in the UK. There are two beaches here, referred to as the Inner and Outer bays. Lifeguards oversee the Outer bay during the summer season, but the Inner bay is usually the more sheltered of the two and is perfect for ticking off a few laps before breakfast.

South Devon’s segment of the South West Coast Path is among the very best. Setting off from Hope Cove, you can uncover secluded beaches, historic landmarks, and some of the region’s most popular destinations. Here are the best routes on our doorstep.

Hope Cove to Soar Mill Cove

This trail leads to one of Devon’s best tucked away coves and is a particularly good route for those with dogs. From Hope Cove, follow the coast path westward. You’ll soon wrap around the headland of Bolt Tail, where far-reaching panoramic views can be enjoyed. On the return stretch, you can hike back along the coast path or alternatively carve a circular path through the countryside. Find full details here.

Hope Cove to Salcombe

This is an extension of the trail to Soar Mill Cove, following the coast path further along to Hope Cove’s neighbouring town. Salcombe is a beautiful riverside destination that offers a wealth of restaurants, pubs and cafés, together with water-based activities. Find full details here.

Hope Cove to South Milton Sands

Navigating the coast path eastwards will lead you to South Milton Sands, also known as Thurlestone Beach. This sandy stretch is popular among families and bathers and has a maze of rock pools to explore. The centrepiece of the beach however is Thurlestone Rock – a picturesque arch that protrudes from the sea and makes for a wonderful landmark during sunsets. Find full details here.

Of Hope Cove’s two beaches, Harbour Beach is dog-friendly all year. The other, Mouthwell Sands, operates a seasonal ban, instead welcoming pooches from the end of September until the end of April.

Ivybridge train station is the closest to Hope Cove, however, it operates a limited train service. Totnes is only slightly further away and sits on the mainline, connecting Devon to London.
