Once you've settled into your home for the next few days, head out onto the two mile stretch of Widemouth Bay. Continue onto the southern dog-friendly part of the beach known as Black Rock to let the children run around and your four-legged friends splash in the sea and run along the sand.
From here, take a walk along the South West Coast Path. If you’re feeling energetic, follow the picturesque route all the way to Bude and beyond where you can see the rugged coastline, the 1830s octagonal storm tower on Compass Point known to locals as "The Pepper Pot" as well as the breakwater and Barrel Rock below. On your way back, stop off for a well-earned drink on the sun terrace at The Bay View Inn and take in the stunning sea view.

When it’s time for dinner, head to Elements. This fantastic family-friendly Italian restaurant is set over Summerleaze Beach and offers some of the best views around. Indulge in delicious homemade pizzas and Italian gelato. Post-dinner, it’s the perfect spot to watch the sun set with a glass of wine whilst the children run around in the large garden. Dogs are welcome in the garden also.
Wake from a restful night’s sleep and hit the beach, armed with fishing nets, swimming costumes and bodyboards. Let the little ones explore the plentiful rockpools on Black Rock Beach, before all braving the sea. Or, if you're feeling more adventurous, try a family coasteering session with Freewave Surf Academy, or an energizing surf lesson with OA Surf School. With over two decades of experience, the enthusiastic team will have you riding your first wave in no time.
After working up an appetite on the beach, head to The Rec Tea Rooms. This family-run eatery offers hearty breakfasts, delicious sandwiches, fantastic cakes and a never-ending supply of tea alongside beautiful sea views. You can also bring dogs into the garden.
Following your leisurely lunch, hit the fairways and brush up on your swing at Bude and North Cornwall’s Golf Club. This traditional links course is one of the best in Cornwall, with delightful countryside and sea views. If your enthusiasm outweighs your skill, then you can always head to the crazy golf down by the castle instead.
If golf isn't your thing, try your hand at horse riding at Broomhill Manor Stables on the outskirts of Bude, which provides coaching for all ages and abilities. For the more experienced rider, two-hour cliff rides are available.
Spend your evening at Temple, nominated for the Good Food Guide 100 Best Local Restaurants 2026, they're a standout independent wine bar and restaurant that celebrate local produce. Share small plates and sample their exquisite wines as you stretch out the evening for as long as possible here. It's an intimate, warm and inviting spot set just a few hundred metres from the beach.

For dinner, it’s got to be The Beach House. With unbeatable views over Widemouth Bay, seating on the sand and a seafood menu, it's no wonder why this special spot has been hailed as one of the top beachside bars and restaurants in The Times. Post-dinner, treat yourself to a delicious cocktail as you watch the sun go down over the beach.

No trip to Bude would be complete without swimming in the semi-natural tidal pool nestled beneath the cliffs at Summerleaze Beach. Created in the 1930s, the pool is open throughout the year and is free for all to use. The water temperature ranges from 11c to 18c so a wetsuit is advisable!
Post-swim, head to Life’s A Beach for a spot of lunch. Affectionately known as LAB, it's hugely popular with locals and visitors alike. Set above Summerleaze Beach, enjoy the delicious burgers, Cuban sandwiches and local mussels by day and fantastic seafood by night. The crab bisque and tiger prawn and spiced fish curry are a must. Dogs are welcome on the terrace.
Accessibility notes: at Summerleaze Beach, there's a Changing Places restroom, a large flat viewing area and a sand chair can be hired from the Big Blue Surf School.

Dating back to 1774, the historic Bude Canal route is a hive of activity on and off the water. Explore the picturesque scenery by bike, on foot or take to the water where you'll spot a wealth of wildlife. Choose between an easy flat walk along the canal to Helebridge or attempt a more challenging circular walk along the South West Coast Path from Helebridge to Widemouth Bay and back to Bude. There are various routes on offer to suit most abilities and on each of them you'll be reawarded with wildlife and an idyllic landscape.
Canoeing and kayaking is another great way to see the canal and Shoreline Extreme Sports offer beginners and intermediate sessions for all ages. Or if you'd prefer a gentler paddle you can hire rowing boats or even a giant swan pedalo from Bude Rowing Boats, located just beside the canal near The Lock Gates Café.
If you're feeling peckish, you will find some great restaurants at either end of the canal route. In Helebridge, The Weir restaurant is set in Whalesborough Farm with a pretty lakeside position. Back in Bude, you'll find The Olive Tree, which is positioned beside the canal with al fresco dining and a relaxed atmosphere. They've got a focus on much-loved classic dishes made with care.

After another busy day exploring, La Bocca will be sure to satisfy hungry stomachs. A pizza kitchen with a delicious drinks menu, they're passionate about bringing authentic Italian flavours straight to Bude. Their pizzas are made the Neapolitan way with slow rising dough which is then stone baked. And they have a takeaway option so you can enjoy them at the beach, too.
