Wharf House

Mousehole, CornwallSleeps: 6 - 10Bedrooms: 4Bathrooms: 4

Home > Our Properties > Wharf House
With uninterrupted views from its position on the harbourfront, Wharf House is a vibrant and historic home where you'll quickly fall under Mousehole's spell.
  • Uninterrupted harbour views
  • Cedar-clad Polhus barrel sauna
  • Mezzanine den with rope swing
  • Outdoor bath tubs
  • TV room
  • Indoor slide

Steeped in history and with calming harbour views, Wharf House is a striking coastal home in the heart of Mousehole. Lovingly restored and interior designed by Woodford Architects, this 1850s property has lived many lives – once a daffodil store, sail loft, and carpenters’ workshop. Most notably, it became home to the transatlantic cable rerouted here during the First World War, connecting the UK to the US for the first time. Now preserved within the house, this piece of history is even referenced in the Treaty of Versailles. Today, Wharf House stands as a luxurious homestay, complete with sea views, a sauna, and two outdoor baths.

Sleeping 10 guests across four uniquely designed bedrooms, the interiors pay tribute to a colourful past. Upstairs, you'll find two super king rooms; one that overlooks the harbour and one with courtyard garden views that can also be made up as a twin. Both feature en-suites and freestanding baths. Formerly the home’s study, the master bedroom is now encased with vintage books, plus a rolling ladder for reaching the perfect bedtime read. Guests can easily lose hours here, sat in the window seat watching kayaks and gulls in the harbour below. Bedrooms three and four await downstairs. One can be a twin or a super king, while the "shark office" features twin double bunks, making it a natural choice for children.

wharf-house-right.jpg
wharf-house-left.jpg

Blending the old with the new, interiors here are joyful in design yet practical in function. Built-in window seats frame views of the working harbour, while a TV room, indoor slide, and mezzanine den with a rope swing bring whimsy and warmth to every corner. Sitting under high beams with dual-aspect windows, the vibrant open plan kitchen, living and dining space anchors the home, complete with a wood burner and walk-in pantry.

Stepping outside, seek sanctuary in the enclosed garden. An unexpected find in Mousehole, the space accommodates a large outdoor table, a charcoal barbeque, two outdoor baths, a barrel sauna, and a shower. Serve pastries and freshly brewed coffee before taking a moment to savour the warmth of the sauna and cold therapy of the drench bucket. The baths are heated - so evenings under the stars can be spent in a cloud of bubbles, with champagne flutes in hand.

When it comes to nearby favourites, explore delis like No.1 and traditional pubs like the Ship Inn, or ask our Concierge team to book you a table at 2 Fore Street. Argoe and Mackerel Sky in Newlyn serve the finest seafood this side of the coast, and the Jubilee Pool in Penzance offers geothermal waters. At Christmastime, you’ll find no better spot to admire the famous Mousehole Harbour Lights. Twinkling displays are installed mere moments away, so Wharf House guests are promised front row seats.

Wharf House is brand new to our portfolio. Our professional video and interactive floorplans are coming soon.

Our favourite features

Rarely does a Mousehole cottage combine a prime harbourfront location with such a unique and spacious interior. Wharf House promises the best of both worlds, while never comprimising on quality. Every room has been thoughtfully designed, and the ocean waits a matter of footsteps from the door.

More about theGround Floor

Bedroom Three with En-suite

History buffs will love spending the night beside a Cornwall relic from days gone by. Framed by glass on the bedroom wall, marvel at a surviving section of the transatlantic cable that ran straight through Wharf House during WWI.

Drawing on its harbourfront setting, this restful bedroom features blue coral wallpaper, sun-washed pinks, and hints of orange. The super king bed can be split into twins thanks to its zip and link design, while a walk-in wardrobe with a vintage dressing table provides generous storage. Harbour views steal the show here – particularly special in winter, when the Christmas lights dance across the water.

Meanwhile, the accompanying en-suite has been finished in blues and terracottas, with striped floor tiles and a walk-in waterfall shower.

Bedroom Four | The Shark Office

Also known as the "the shark office", bedroom four is full of character and pays homage to its past life as Mousehole’s fishing operator.

Exposed stone walls frame double wooden bunk beds, while playful shark motifs swim above the door. Built-in drawers and double cupboards offer ample storage. Cosy yet imaginative, it’s sure to be a firm favourite among younger guests.

Family Bathroom

Thoughtfully placed to serve bedroom four as well as the outdoor space, the family bathroom is complete with a waterfall shower. Interior-wise, it's been beautifully finished in soft pinks, with monochrome fixtures and fittings.

TV Room

Totally encased in cork from floor to ceiling, the TV room is a cocooning retreat made for laid back film nights. A sumptuous red velvet sofa faces a wall-mounted Smart TV with a soundbar, inviting guests to settle in and unwind.

Utility

Tucked beneath the staircase, the utility room is cleverly designed for everyday essentials. With a butler sink, Bosch washing machine, tumble dryer and built-in storage, it’s where you’ll find all the practical touches for coastal living. Holiday laundry can easily be taken care of after beach trips thanks to the Sheila Maid suspended overhead. Plus, al fresco dining is made easy with a built-in fridge to keep drinks chilled.

Lookout

With picture-perfect views over the harbour, this additional hideout provides space to read, create, and play. Exposed stone walls and wooden beams pair beautifully with dark blue day beds, while the harmonium adds a unique vintage touch.

Hallway

The hallway sets a playful tone from the moment you walk in. Think curiosity shelves, stone flooring, and a bright yellow slide that offers a fun alternative to the stairs. There’s plenty of practical storage with wooden hooks and cork cupboards, plus a low-level shower designed for rinsing sandy feet.

More about theFirst Floor

Kitchen and Pantry

An amalgamation of white cabinetry, exposed timber and industrial accents, Wharf House’s kitchen sits at the heart of the open plan living space. At its centre, a deep blue island becomes the gathering point for family breakfasts and celebratory toasts, paired with a Smeg induction hob* and double Bosch dishwashers. Well-equipped for both home cooks and private chefs, you’ll also find a Bosch fridge and a Smeg oven tucked neatly into the run of cabinetry.

Overhead, an industrial-style suspended rack showcases vintage cookware, while behind the sink, a striking rust splashback gives a nod to Mousehole’s rockpools that await just beyond the window.

Hidden at the back of the kitchen, the blush-hued pantry is complete with all the essentials. A Nespresso Magimix coffee machine, Smeg combi oven and an under-counter Bosch fridge and freezer are ready for morning routines, while a built-in bar awaits for mojito prep.

*Please note that guests with pacemakers should avoid using the induction hob as this can interfere with the device.

Dining and Living Area

Capturing uninterrupted views across Mousehole Harbour, the living and dining area completes the first floor. Naturally extending the social space, this area sits beneath high beamed ceilings and is lit by an array of rattan lampshades. In the centre is a wooden farmhouse table which invites 10 guests to settle in for supper, and a pink dresser sits close by, brimming with Cornishware.

Tying the spaces together is the wood burner. Framed by hand-painted blue and white tiles, and with two tan leather armchairs nearby, it becomes the focal point once night falls. Additional seating comes in the form of a large striped sofa, a hanging bubble chair and two built-in window seats that overlook glistening waters at high tide, or golden beach at low tide. Made out of the carpenter's bench from the original cottage's workshop (now the ground floor snug), the large coffee table grounds the space. With the fire lit, the sun setting, and the red wine poured, there’s no better place to share tales of past and present.

Master Bedroom with En-suite and Dressing Room

A show-stopping hideout with frontline harbour views, this former study is now a tranquil retreat come night-time. Wraparound bookshelves with a rolling ladder and vintage hardbacks encase the super king bed, while a window seat invites quiet wave-watching every morning. Dusty blues and high timbered beams lend a timeless charm, while the bold striped ceiling adds a contemporary edge as soon as you walk in.

The accompanying en-suite features a freestanding bath tub and a waterfall shower, plus ample under-sink storage. Echoing the home’s layered design, it blends rich blues and vibrant oranges throughout. In the sunken dressing room, you'll find vintage mirrors and a reclaimed dressing table that complete the space and make morning routines all the more luxurious.

Bedroom Two with En-suite

Bathed in natural light thanks to dual-aspect windows, bedroom two is a dreamy space finished in pale blues, dusty pinks and bold orange accents. A striped upholstered headboard frames the zip and link super king bed, set beneath colourful woven lampshades. Guests can enjoy pretty views over the courtyard garden, while vintage bedside tables, built-in shelving and a generous wardrobe provide plenty of storage.

The en-suite is revealed through coral-framed glass doors, where a checkerboard blue-tiled floor leads to a freestanding stainless steel bath – perfectly placed for harbour views.

WC

Adorned with a nostalgic collection of postcards salvaged from the original cottage, this powder room is affectionately known as the “postcard loo” and serves those using the first floor living space.

More about theMezzanine

Den

Tucked away above the kitchen and reached via a twisting wooden staircase, the mezzanine den is a charming hideaway beneath the eaves. Designed with children and teenagers in mind, it’s a perfect breakout space from the main living area.

Sunshine yellow beams nod to the room’s past life as a daffodil store. In the mid-1900s, locally grown daffodil bulbs were delivered here through a hatch behind where the TV now stands, before being stored in large quantities in the attic above.

While most of the attic has since been opened up, the mezzanine remains as a playful tribute to that bygone era. Soft blues and greys across the L-shaped sofa add a calming, cosy touch.

A rope swing provides the fun, and mesh netting ensures little ones are never far from earshot – with the added thrill of peering down on the kitchen goings-on below.

More about theExterior

Garden

A rare find in the heart of Mousehole, the enclosed garden at Wharf House has been beautifully landscaped to feel like a secret sanctuary. Sheltered beneath shady trees and swaying grasses, it offers dappled light and a sense of calm that feels worlds away from the harbour just beyond.

At its centre, a round outdoor table sets the scene for sociable lunches, while a charcoal Weber barbeque provides the perfect set-up for seafood suppers on warm evenings.

Sauna

Nestled among the greenery, the cedar-clad barrel sauna brings a touch of Nordic luxury to this Cornish setting. Heat up after a sea swim or coast path ramble, and enjoy a moment cocooned in warmth and the scent of eucalyptus.

Outdoor Baths
Just beyond the sauna, twin steel baths sit side by side, with hot running water for an evening soak beneath the stars. Whether it's a morning dip or a post-supper ritual with a glass of something sparkling, the private setting promises total relaxation.

Outdoor Shower and Drench Bucket

Cool down after sauna sessions with the outdoor shower. To complete the spa experience, there's also a drench bucket for those in need of a wake-up.

Parking

There are two designated parking spaces located a five-minute walk away, allocated for guests at Wharf House. For additional vehicles, there's a public car park 10 metres from the front door that makes for easy luggage drop-offs.
