May half term holiday home FAQs

May Cornwall breaks offer the perfect opportunity to embrace longer days and milder weather, before the high numbers of summer visitors arrive. Although sunny weather isn’t guaranteed, this time of year usually sees temperatures of between 14 and 18 degrees during the day.

We recommend coming prepared for spring showers and warmer sunny weather. Bring sunglasses for bright, May days as well as warmer layers, so you can take advantage of longer daylight hours with evening beach strolls.

There are often spells of warmer weather during May bank holiday breaks in Cornwall, the spring sunshine offering the ideal opportunity for beach days, watersports and coastal walks. Devon May half term breaks and Somerset stays are also popular at this time of year, with milder weather providing the perfect conditions for exploring the countryside and coast.

Many families bring windbreaks or small tents to the beach, providing shelter from the ocean breeze, and wetsuits are recommended for bodyboarding and sea swimming. The warmer spring weather and longer evenings invite leisurely beach picnics and sunset barbeques, with plenty of sea-view restaurants to enjoy should the weather turn cooler.

A South West staycation lends itself perfectly to holidaying with four-legged friends, with many beaches welcoming dogs and miles of coastal paths to explore. Our choice of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall cottages in May half term includes many dog-friendly properties, with beautiful walks and open spaces nearby.

Our Concierge team can advise which beaches welcome dogs at this time of year, as well as places to visit with your canine companion in the local area, including restaurants and attractions.

Family holidays in Cornwall in May offer a relaxing break for everyone, whatever the weather brings, with a range of child-friendly attractions to enjoy. From watersports and cycling adventures to theme parks and wildlife parks, there’s something for all ages.

With an abundance of family attractions to visit in Devon and Somerset too, the South West offers the perfect setting for a May half term getaway. Each county has opportunities for watersports, whether on the ocean, or a river or lake, as well as an abundance of walking and cycling trails. Wildlife-watching on the moor, crabbing from the harbour wall and beach games are all cost-free, with a range of all-weather attractions to choose from too.

Short breaks in Cornwall in May are only available outside of the school holidays, with seven-night stays being the minimum booking length during the half term weeks. However, if you can only stay for five nights, you're welcome to book a week-long stay and make the most of the late check-out on your final day. With no need to leave by 10am, this option provides some added flexibility and avoids the final morning rush.

Short breaks are available for most of our properties during the quieter periods, including the first May bank holiday. Peak times of year, such as school holidays, are reserved for stays of one week or more.

May half term breaks in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall begin at seven nights, and most arrival days tend to be either Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays.

Out of season, we can sometimes accommodate arrivals on alternative days that aren’t shown online. We’d recommend speaking to our team to discuss these options.
