Activities on your doorstep

With plenty to explore right on the doorstep of The Downes, as well as a little further afield, we’ve rounded up the best activities for all ages to enjoy. From award-winning local restaurants to picture-perfect beaches and fantastic family days out, take a look at what’s nearby to make your stay truly unforgettable. Our fantastic concierge team and dedicated holiday planners will also be happy to help you book anything you’d like to do throughout your stay.

We are all still unable to extract ourselves from the memory of sheer luxury and utter joy experienced on our holiday. Everything worked and the garden was equal to a National Trust property. It was a taste of heaven. The swimming pool was heated for us even though it was just before Easter, and we enjoyed very warm weather for our first four days.

The Lainchbury Family

My family have just had the most WONDERFUL stay at The Downes and would like to thank you all for an excellent service. The house and facilities exceeded our expectations. We had glorious rides along the Tarka Trail track down onto the estuary. Thanks again for a ‘perfect stay’.

The Channers Family, Bath

What a house, what a location, what fantastic company! We had such a great time getting lost in the house, swimming in the pool, cycling on the Tarka Trail and body boarding down at the beach – English holidaying at its best!

The Guest Family, Hampshire

Thank you for such a wonderful weekend in a gorgeous house. The only thing to spoil an otherwise perfect stay was the English rugby team!

The Laurensons, Surrey

We had a wonderful week in a very lovely family home – just perfect for a big group of varying ages. The peace and tranquility of the location was perfect, but also near enough to shops/bike hire/Tarka Trail to make life very easy! Overall the house and grounds were wonderful and little extras/touches such as picking the fruit/veg from the garden and the welcome food pack made it a very memorable stay.

The Peto-Dias's, Somerset

We had the most amazing time. Faultless. Brian was wonderful so please pass on our thanks again. We made some fantastic family memories over the week, and that is priceless. Perfect Stays was a great find for us as a family and I’ve recommended you several times already. Thanks to the team who made it easy and a pleasant experience. We’ve all said we’ll be back soon.

The Staples, Cambridgeshire

This is a stunning house in a stunning garden in a stunning location. We were left to our own devices which meant we felt it was entirely our home. Brian was, however, well on hand for bins and wood! The facilities provided for children were wonderful and we used them all. I particularly recommend the use of the bath with views of the magnolia and camellia in full blossom. Ours was a flawless stay and we are so grateful to the house’s owners. We were all stunned!

The Pedley Family, Hexham

I just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time at The Downes and that the house was great and so comfortable – a big hit with my whole family. Thanks to the weather, we could make really good use of the pool and tennis court and it was a beautiful place to spend a week together. Brian was also really helpful, friendly and unobtrusive.

The Bird Family, Surrey

We have had an amazing weekend. The house is absolutely beautiful and was the perfect place to hold our Christmas gathering and murder mystery party. Thank you to Brian for the warm welcome.

The Bellemans Party, London

We have had the most wonderful time. Your house is so beautiful and it has been such a treat to come here. We have been for walks, to the beach, swam and laughed a lot. It has been perfect. Thank you so much.

Amy, Jim, Isla and Bertie

A wonderful stay – thank you!

The Potts Family, London

Another wonderful few days in the beautiful house. Great fun with the gang – fun, laughter and love.

Four days of fun at The Downes, loved swimming, eating fresh food from the garden, walking on the beach collecting shells and gorgeous Rosemoor – what more would we want?

A magical break was had by adults and children. Lots of laughs and many happy memories made. Thank you for a wonderful break!

The Brass Family

Another year, another wonderful time. We are beginning to feel like The Downes is a home from home but with all the delight of continuing to explore it all. The swimming pool was a daily clash of adult relaxation and children’s wild entertainment. See you again next year.

The Channer Family, Bath

We have had a wonderful week here in this absolutely lovely house. The weather has been amazing so we have spent much of the week just enjoying the house, garden, tennis lawn and pool. Thank you to The Times, where I read about The Downes being the best for large parties. Most of all, thank you to the owners for allowing us to share for a week a house and garden you clearly treasure.

The Thompson Family, Wiltshire

What a wonderful stay – beautiful house, idyllic location and weather! Thank you.

Well, what can we say? You have given us a very memorable stay. We are leaving reinvigorated for our next couple of months on the cherry farm. Lots of fun stories for the dinner parties ahead!

Rupert and Liz

Thank you so much for letting us use your house for the weekend. The house releases joyfulness and happiness in every single room and I hope we left behind the same feelings as we all laughed and sang from Friday night right up until Monday morning. It’s what we all needed at this time of year and we all go home feeling we can cope with the world! Thank you so much.

The Jones Family, West Midlands

Perfect weather and a very joyous break. This house is a happy house, it radiates happiness. If you ever want to sell it, just let us know! It’s great.

The Roberts Family, Warwickshire

An idyllic long weekend of tennis, swimming, beaches, water slides, delicious food and drink and great company. The comfiest of beds, beautiful weather – what a relaxing treat for us all.

Clara, Rob, Ruby and Frankie

To lie in the bath and watch the magnolia in full bloom – you can’t get better than that. A lovely, lovely house.

The Pedley Family, Hexham
