Visiting Mawgan Porth in spring

March to May

As days grow longer and Cornish hedgerows burst into spring colours, it's the perfect time to savour quiet beaches and coastal paths before the summer visitors arrive. Once famed for shipwrecks and smuggling, the dramatic landscape in North Cornwall offers towering, rugged cliffs and extraordinary rock formations to discover all along the South West Coast Path.

As you explore the north coast seascape, look out for coastal birds including gulls, cormorants and choughs, and seals in the Atlantic waves below. Wildlife enthusiasts can also head out on a boat trip from nearby Padstow, where seals, basking sharks and dolphins can often be spotted in the water.

Spring is an ideal time to experience this stunning area before the height of summer, offering a relaxed escape with scenic coastal walks and indulgent visits to the spas at the Bedruthan and Scarlet hotels. Embrace warmer weather and lighter evenings with a beach barbeque, then unwind with sweeping ocean-view sunsets from the balcony of your luxury holiday home.

Best for: spa breaks, walking holidays and enjoying longer daylight hours with beach barbeques and sunset drinks.

Expect: quieter beaches before the peak season begins, lighter evenings and mild weather, with spring showers.

Visiting Mawgan Porth in summer

June to August

Mawgan Porth summer holidays are perfect for families, with sun-filled beach days, refreshing sea swims and long, balmy evenings. As it's peak school holiday season, the area is naturally busier, so the beach can get crowded and restaurants may require advanced bookings. Our Concierge team are always happy to help with restaurant recommendations and bookings. We recommend visiting the beach as early in the day as possible and spending afternoons at your stylish holiday home, with a heated pool or hot tub to relax in, away from the crowds.

Late afternoons and early evenings are perfect for exploring the coast path or a round of mini golf in Mawgan Porth before dinner. For family-friendly adventures, Lappa Valley, Camel Creek Adventure Park and St Eval Kart Circuit are all within easy reach. The tranquil Japanese Garden in St Mawgan village is just moments away, while the surrounding coastline offers an abundance of watersports, from surfing to wind surfing and coasteering.

Best for: beach holidays, family-friendly attractions, watersports and dining al fresco.

Expect: beaches to be busier due to the school holidays, with warmer weather to enjoy.

Visiting Mawgan Porth in autumn

September to November

Embrace quieter beaches and mild sea temperatures during the autumn, with a slower-paced stay in Mawgan Porth after Cornwall’s peak season. With superb surfing conditions, quieter stretches of coast path and golden autumn sunsets, this time of year is often referred to as the region’s "sweet spot". Visit Porth Island to find choughs and other coastal birds or Butterwell Farm, which is situated beside the Camel Estuary, for nature-spotting opportunities, with otters, deer, kingfishers, herons and various water-loving creatures to discover.

Admire the shifting colours on a leisurely stroll through St Mawgan Woods, then unwind with a traditional cream tea at St Mawgan Tea Room and Garden before heading back to Mawgan Porth for a surf. Later, enjoy dinner at Catch Seafood Bar and Grill or at one of the many restaurants in Padstow or Newquay.

Best for: surfing holidays, autumn sunsets, enjoying a slow pace of life, with quieter beaches and warm sea temperatures.

Expect: beautiful beaches without the crowds, a mixture of weather including mild and wet weather, with some cooler days.
