Quiet corners of Mawgan Porth Beach

Embrace a slower pace of life in Cornwall, the calming coastal scenery and ocean air providing the perfect surroundings to get away from it all. During the school holidays and fine weather days, some areas of Mawgan Porth Beach become crowded, but there are always quieter areas to be found.

Early mornings and evenings are popular with locals and visitors who enjoy a peaceful meander along the beach. Whether heading out for a sunrise dog walk or a stroll along the shore at sunset, it always feels magical to be one of very few people on such a vast stretch of sand.

Even during the middle of the day, hidden spots in Mawgan Porth can be uncovered if you know where to look. Backed by steep cliffs and high sand dunes, the north end of the beach is usually quieter than the central area, making it the perfect spot for beach picnics. During low tide, there’s a small, secluded area known as Beacon Cove. Ideal for finding space away from the busiest areas and playing beach games, be sure to check tide times to avoid getting cut off.

Coastal paths and clifftop views near Mawgan Porth

Scenic views in Mawgan Porth and beyond are best enjoyed from an elevated position on the South West Coast Path, away from the crowds on the beach. Other quiet beaches near Mawgan Porth can be accessed via the coast path, with open landscape, far-reaching ocean views and opportunities for wildlife-watching along the way.

Take in panoramic Atlantic views from the cliff path, which can be reached from both sides of the beach. The coastal walking route to Bedruthan Steps is accessed from the cliffs on the right-hand side of the beach, when facing towards the sea. Following a steep climb at the start of the walk, the pathway then levels out. After just over three miles of stunning coastal scenery, there’s an incredible vantage point of the giant rock stacks at Bedruthan.

In the opposite direction, from the west side of Mawgan Porth, the South West Coast Path leads to Watergate Bay, offering a breath-taking four-mile walk with a beautiful sandy beach at the end point. This expansive two-mile stretch of sand is a prime destination for surfing and kite surfing. Within another mile, Porth Beach can be reached, where there’s a beachside pub and a sheltered stretch of golden sand.

Secluded beaches and coves close to Mawgan Porth

Hidden coves and secluded bays can be reached by foot or within a short drive from Mawgan Porth. More isolated spots tend to be quieter, so if you don’t mind a walk first, unspoilt and empty beaches await.

A short drive away, Porth Joke Beach (known locally as Polly Joke) is a popular destination for spotting grey seals, while the surrounding West Pentire cliffs come to life with colourful poppies during the spring. Embark on a circular walk to enjoy sweeping views of the countryside and coast here, then head over to Crantock for a beach picnic, sheltered beside the soft dunes.

As well as being a popular destination for spotting grey seals, Polly Joke Beach is generally quieter than other beaches in the area, with an abundance of caves to explore and a soft stretch of sand that welcomes dogs year-round.

Nestled between Mawgan Porth and Padstow, Porthcothan is a west-facing beach, sheltered by dramatic towering cliffs. This hidden gem is dog-friendly all year round, with gorgeous sand and turquoise waters, just a 10-minute drive from the village of St Merryn, where you’ll find shops and pubs.

Escape the hustle and bustle at Hawkers Cove, a lesser-known beach near Padstow. Best reached by foot along the coast path, there’s a small tea shop here, but no other facilities. Another one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets, Fox Cove is tucked between Porthcothan and Treyarnon Bays, and is a small, rugged inlet backed by steep cliffs. Access to this beach is fairly challenging and you’ll need to check tide times before visiting.

Closer towards Newquay, you’ll find Lusty Glaze Beach, which is privately owned and accessed via 130 steps. Dog-friendly and open to the public year-round, unless being used for a private event such as a wedding, this glorious beach is home to a relaxed bar and restaurant, perfect for enjoying a mesmerising north coast sunset. Secluded places near Mawgan Porth are often stumbled upon when exploring clifftop paths, or when taking an inland detour on a circular walk, across fields, through woodland or along quiet Cornish lanes.

Countryside views and inland escapes

Peaceful places in Mawgan Porth can also be found inland, offering a welcome break from the beach and a chance to explore picturesque areas of countryside. A 20-minute walk inland from the beach takes you to leafy woodland and hidden creeks at Retorrick Mill. Here you’ll find a bar and restaurant with regular music events and bonfire evenings, in an idyllic, tucked away position.

Another scenic circular walk from Mawgan Porth follows the Menalhyl River along the Vale of Lanherne, though luscious woodland and fields to the historic village of St Mawgan. Discover a medieval church and convent in this tranquil riverside village and enjoy refreshments at the delightful tearoom or local pub.

The best scenic walks in Mawgan Porth are those that combine countryside and coast, providing a sense of calm that can only be achieved when immersed in nature. Earlier in the day or later in the afternoon are the most peaceful times to explore but walks in the middle of the day can also provide a welcome break from the busy beach.

Best times of day for peace and scenic views

We recommend taking advantage of mornings and evenings during your stay, whether surfing, sunbathing or exploring the coast path. During a sunrise stroll, you could have most of the beach to yourself and barbeque dinners at sunset are perfect for embracing a quieter beach too. Spring and autumn tend to be quieter times of year to visit, avoiding the peak summer season, but there are always quieter areas to be found, especially at low tide.

North Cornwall coastal views are some of the best within the Westcountry and, with Mawgan Porth being ideally situated between Padstow and Newquay, an abundance of glorious beaches can be found along this stretch of coast. There are plenty of beautiful walks, both on the coast and inland, making Mawgan Porth a wonderful location for exploring.
