There are two shingle beaches in Newlyn, both of which are dog-friendly throughout the year. Tolcarne Beach is found on the edge of the village, just along from the fish market and quays. The second lies on the other side of Newlyn, below the green.
One of the best attractions near Newlyn sits in full view out on the bay. St Michael’s Mount is among Cornwall’s most recognisable destinations and has been used as the setting for numerous films and TV shows. This beautiful and imposing tidal island is accessible on foot at low tide, with the waves receding to reveal a historic, cobbled causeway. When the tide comes in, severing the Mount from the mainland, you can catch a ferry across instead. Aside from the medieval castle, the island hosts an ancient harbour, church, exotic garden, shops and cafés.
Newlyn Filmhouse offers an exclusive cinema experience. With a ban on snacks, you can watch arthouse and blockbuster releases without the distraction of background popcorn crunching. While you can’t take food into the screens, the cinema restaurant serves a delicious menu to ensure your hunger cravings are satisfied prior to the film.
This gorgeous patch of West Cornwall is adorned with mesmerising coastal trails. Here are some of the best trails found right on Newlyn’s doorstep.
Newlyn to Mousehole
The coastal path westward from Newlyn winds around to Mousehole. This picturesque fishing village is a must-visit, promising beautiful views and a fantastic range of places to eat. Rather than double back along the seafront, you can instead navigate a circular trail that follows a footpath over fields to the historic church at Paul. The vicar based here during the 19th century was a descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte. Find full details here.
Newlyn to Penzance
Heading in the opposite direction, the coastal trail to Penzance is equally pleasing and offers a chance to discover one of Cornwall’s most famous towns. You’ll pass several historic sites of interest, including the site of a Celtic chapel, Jubilee Pool, and Penzance’s subtropical Morrab Gardens, which date back to 1841. Find full details here.
Mousehole to Lamorna Cove
This scenic circular trail begins in the neighbouring village of Mousehole and joins the coastal path to Lamorna Cove. One your way to one of West Cornwall’s most cherished destinations, you’ll chart a path through woods and around the headland of Carn Du, from which panoramic views can be enjoyed. Find full details here.
The waters of Mount’s Bay are very popular with swimmers. Keep in mind that there is no lifeguard cover here, however, the sea is often calm and clear. With views towards St Michael’s Mount and a range of cafés and pubs to warm up in afterwards, this is a lovely location for a dip. A little further along the coast, at the eastern edge of Penzance Promenade, lies Jubilee Pool – the UK’s largest Art Deco sea water lido and geothermally heated pool. This enclosed and sheltered pool is perfect for those seeking a safe outdoor swim without having to worry about waves.
