The Watermill

Withiel, CornwallSleeps: 2 - 4Bedrooms: 2Bathrooms: 1

Home > Our Properties > The Watermill
A blissful Cornish hideaway surrounded by acres of pretty gardens, embrace a slower pace of life at The Watermill.

Built in the early 1800s, The Watermill retains all of its original charm and character, with a fully operating waterwheel set in the quietly trickling stream that surrounds this period cottage.

Wide, green expanses of lawn and farmland surround the property on the private Whitehay Estate, and there are nearby tennis courts and a croquet lawn for guest use. Wonderfully idyllic, while away long summer days amongst the wild orchards, beehives and stream before tramping along the endless woodland trails.

Stout stone walls with deep inset windows make even the large open spaces of the kitchen and living room feel incredibly cosy and warm. The original stone fireplace has been brought back to life with a wood burner, which casts an atmospheric glow during winter retreats. Just as lovely on summer days, open up the French doors and let the sunshine pour in from the surrounding countryside and spacious decking.

The country-style master bedroom comes with a super king bed and looks out across the luscious garden on the ground floor. There’s a spacious bathroom just next door. The second bedroom is tucked beneath the eaves upstairs and benefits from a super king size bed, which can be set up as twins if needed.

Situated within the picturesque Ruthern Valley in North Cornwall, The Watermill is the ideal holiday home for those looking to escape from the fast pace of everyday life and take a moment to recharge. Peace and quiet is in abundance, whilst the popular north coast beaches of Polzeath, Harlyn Bay, Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay are all within a 30 minute drive.

More about theGround Floor

Kitchen and Dining Room

Culinary enthusiasts will love the custom-built kitchen, handmade with beautiful Corian work surfaces, grey slate flagstone flooring and white painted wooden beams. Equipped with a Siemens induction hob and oven, along with a dishwasher and Liebherr fridge-freezer, The Watermill’s country kitchen is well stocked with modern appliances. There’s also a Siemens washing machine and tumble dryer, along with a Nespresso coffee machine. A nearby borehole taps into natural water supplies and provides the cottage with incredibly pure water, which is rich in minerals and free from chemicals.

Please note: guests with pacemakers should avoid using the induction hob as this can interfere with the device.

Master Bedroom

This traditional cottage bedroom sits on the quiet ground floor and comes with a super king size bed, double wardrobe and dressing table. Lay back on the eiderdown duvet and gaze up at the sky through the Velux windows and let time melt away.

Family Bathroom

Just next to the master bedroom, the family bathroom benefits from a Carronite bathtub and large walk-in shower. Marbled ceramic floors exude elegance whilst chalky blue cupboards maintain a shabby chic charm.

Outdoor pursuits

The Camel Trail runs between Bodmin and Padstow and is perfect for picking up at its mid-way point in Wadebridge. Hire bikes and cycle beside the estuary before enjoying lunch in Padstow’s harbour. For golfing pursuits, we recommend Lanhydrock Golf Club, just a 20 minute drive away. Nearer the coast, you’ll find the renowned St Enodoc Golf Club, as well as the popular St Kew. Those tempted by clay pigeon shooting can experience the thrilling country sport with Green Leisure near Newquay.

Festivals and events

A three day extravaganza held just outside Wadebridge, The Royal Cornwall Show is the county’s largest annual event and attracts thousands of visitors every June. Wander amongst the myriad of stalls and shows, from rare breed animals to cooking demonstrations. Children will love taking part in the annual charity duck race held at the River Ruthern, while the Padstow Christmas Festival is the perfect way to embrace the holiday spirit.

Beaches and watersports

Withiel’s central location means you’re never too far away from a beautiful golden beach. Some of Cornwall’s best sandy stretches lie just a short drive away, from Polzeath and Daymer Bay on the north coast to Looe and Talland Bay in the south. Adrenaline junkies can enjoy endless watersports opportunities, from scuba diving and sailing to coasteering and surf lessons. Thrill-seekers can head to Retallack Aqua Park to tackle the inflatable obstacle course, wakeboarding or the giant trampoline.

Food and drink

Embark on a stop-by-stop journey around the county’s vineyards with Cornish Wine Tours and sample your way through the county’s finest reds, whites, rosés and sparkling until you find a new favourite. If a Cornish pub is more your thing, enjoy a local ale at The Quarryman or stop by the 300-year-old Maltsters Arms in the village of Chapel Amble. Foodies will love Nathan Outlaw’s Michelin starred Fish Kitchen in Port Isaac, while budding chefs can perfect their culinary skills at Rick Stein’s Padstow seafood school.

Time for pampering

Treat yourself to an afternoon at the award-winning Cowshed Spa, boasting six luxury treatment rooms and a tempting array of pick-me-ups. Relax with a glass of champagne or enjoy downtime with friends from the comfort of the outdoor pool. If you're hoping to keep up with your fitness regime during your stay, Hustyns Spa is nestled in the countryside, home to a health and fitness club and weekly classes.

Customer Reviews

See what previous guests have to say from our guestbooks, direct messages and online reviews. We also visit every property - and even stay in many of them too - so whether it's about the house or the local area, our team of experts can provide personal insights to help find the perfect property for you.

We had to find somewhere for half-term at the last minute and Perfect Stays were fantastic in helping. The setting is beautiful, the owners were very welcoming and the house itself is delightful.

We know the area well and also found the grounds of the house fantastic to walk in with our 2 children (aged 10 and 6). We would definitely stay here again and having used Perfect Stays before would book through them without hesitation.

We have spent the most lovely week here. The glorious weather has helped, but the house is perfect and Julian and Cherry are delightful hosts. We have enjoyed the house and gardens immensely, wandered the woods and river, played tennis daily and are sad to leave.

The Jaume Family, London - April 2021

Beautiful, cosy cottage in a wonderful setting. We were warmly greeted by Julian and Cherry (and dogs!). The welcome pack was very much appreciated and the cream tea was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you so much.

The Hately Family, Darlington - April 2021

A perfect stay! Thoroughly enjoyed our week exploring the stately homes, gardens and coastlines of North Cornwall, and coming back each day to the warm cottage - a real home from home. Well equipped and very comfortable. Thanks for all the little extras!

The Sampson Family, Bristol - April 2021

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Wonderful location and the most fabulous, warm, cosy and comfortable cottage. We have had beautiful weather for late October which has allowed us to explore some great beaches and enjoy some stunning clifftop walks. We are not ready to leave and go home.

The Shuttleworth Family, Surrey - April 2021

We've enjoyed a perfect relaxing week. Thank you for welcoming us into your beautiful cottage set in the most wonderful location. Can't wait to come back.

The Blackwell and Burrows Party, Kent - April 2021

Perfect in every way - beautiful setting, chocolate box cottage, comfortable and absolutely spotless. Also very friendly, helpful and socially distanced hosts. We especially liked the flowers fresh from the garden in each room.

The Mowatt Family, Surrey - April 2021

Had a fabulous time at The Watermill. Lovely tranquil setting and the hosts, Julian and Cherry, were really welcoming. Felt a true home from home. In a great location for exploring this part of Cornwall with both the north and south coast beaches easy to reach and Bodmin on your doorstep. Thanks for a perfect stay!

The Ballance Family, Bramley - May 2021

The premises were excellent, clean and it had everything you could possibly want including instructions for all the equipment in the house. There was a welcome food package to get the holiday off to a good start which included milk, bread, eggs, bacon, Cornish cream, jam and scones, which we enjoyed very much. Very quiet location and lovely grounds to walk around.

The Peters Party, Kent | Trustpilot - June 2021

Wow, what a fantastic holiday home! We have had a really lovely week and enjoyed exploring the wonderful grounds. The Watermill is very well equipped and so relaxing and peaceful. Thank you for letting the children play with the dogs, they will treasure those memories. We hope to come back and stay again soon.

The Knott Family, Essex | Guestbook - July 2021

The Sawyer Family, London | Guestbook - July 2021

Thank you Julian and Cherry for a lovely stay. The Watermill is a beautiful tranquil spot in a great location for exploring Cornwall. We've had a wonderful time and will no doubt find our way back in the future.

The Ballance Family, Hampshire | Guestbook - July 2021

Such a lovely week in a beautiful cottage and setting! We've had a really relaxing week and feel rejuvenated - fresh air, green countryside, and peace and quiet. Thank you for all your hospitality and kind welcome!

The Kennedy Family, West Sussex | Guestbook - July 2021

Just wanted to say that during these very unsettled times we have all found ourselves in this year, to be able to stay at The Watermill was perfect in everyway. Immaculate, peaceful and very homely. The scones, milk, bread, butter and jam was a lovely gesture. Many thanks.

The Thorpe Family, Chichester | Guestbook - July 2021

We had a super stay at the property. Julian and Cherry were wonderful hosts - just the right amount of making sure we were fine and there were no niggles with the property and giving us space. They even brought round a bottle of prosecco for my husband's birthday. The children loved the outdoor space and being able to roam (and the Netflix on cold evenings!) Thank you to Julian and Cherry for a super week.

The Bluck Family, Worcester | Trustpilot - September 2021

We had to find somewhere for half-term at the last minute and Perfect Stays were fantastic in helping. The setting is beautiful, the owners were very welcoming and the house itself is delightful.
